About Bury st edmunds photographic society
Our Society was founded 1958 as the St Margaret's Camera Club and is open to all those who are interested in photography, whether they are novices, amateurs, or even professionals.

Through practical demonstrations, competitions, lectures or just by talking to others about photography, the Society's aim is to help our members learn more about the art, to encourage the development of photographic skills and the appreciation of photography.

Advice is always on hand, no matter how experienced or inexperienced you are. Our annual programme of weekly events include guest lectures and interactive workshops. Along with these, regular competitions are held - the approach is always supportive rather than competitive, and they can be an excellent way to learn about and think in greater depth about composition and image structure. External judges deliver positive feedback and helpful tips regarding techniques, framing, angles, use of effects etc.

With our membership of the East Anglian Federation, we are affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain and as a result we have access to some of the best judges and lecturers on photography throughout the country.
Club evenings provide an opportunity to swap notes and tips on equipment and/or images, and to get advice from some of the more experienced club members. These are an informal, popular way to learn each other’s  top tips and tricks on shooting and editing in Photoshop or Lightroom, for example.
The workshop sessions are lively, engaging and popular with a wide variety of themes from portraiture, long exposure light trailing, focus stacking, camera triggering, action capture and more. The images on this page were all taken by our members during some of our regular workshop evenings.
We have an active Facebook group where ideas and tips are also regularly shared, as well as advice on gadgets, techniques and kit.
But above all, the Society is composed of, run by, and run for, the benefit of its members.
Membership
Annual membership is £60.00 per person. £40 for full time students. 16-21, free for under-16s with accompanying adult member. For anyone wishing to come to an occasional meeting as a visitor there is a charge of £4.00 per person or £5 if session is an external lecture. Entry to club competitions is only allowed to full members.
Note: There are currently spaces for new members.
If the club reaches full capacity, new members will join as "Provisional Members" at a reduced rate of £40 which gives the member full benefits of every session but will not be able to enter our main competitions (this is due to a restriction on the number of images that can be presented and judged in an evening session). When space becomes available this provisional membership may be converted to full membership.
Our season runs annually from September to May (see the progamme page for details). Meetings commence at 7.30pm and there is normally time before and after, and during the coffee-break, to talk to any of the committee or members of the Society about any photographic problems or questions you may have. In addition to the main programme of events, summer meetings are also organised and details posted nearer the time.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us here.
